The starting line of the Paris Metro was opened with a ceremony in 1900 during the World Exhibition Universal Exhibition. The system expanded very quickly until the outbreak of World War I, and the core of the subway network was completed in 1. The construction of the first extensions to the neighboring suburbs out of the city center was completed in the 1920s. In addition, Line 1930 was completed in this period. After the pause during the automobile age (11-1950), many other suburbs were also included in the lines with extensions.
Technical decisions were made based on the design of the original network, distances between stations, trains with a small number of passenger profiles, and limits that define extensions. Additional carrying capacities, and the growing tramway network, were supported by the Regional Express Network (RER) network created since the 1960s. At the end of the 20th century, however, the Paris Metro opened the fully automated Line 14, to alleviate the burden of Line A of the RER network. Line 14 was the first line opened by Metro, not RER, after 70 years. Special security doors were used to prevent suicide attempts on trains on this line without drivers.
The subway network has also witnessed some accidents in the past and present. While 10 people died in the fire that broke out on August 1903, 84, such a disaster was not experienced for a long time with the measures taken. On August 30, 2000, 24 people were slightly injured in Notre-Dame-de-Lorette Station due to a problem with speed and loss of control. Finally, on August 6, 2005, 19 people were injured in a fire caused by a short circuit in a train at Simplon Station.
The company, called the Paris Metropolitan Railway Company (CMP), which operates most of this transport network, is known briefly as Métropolitain. In the first few years, this name was abbreviated as Metro. Today, a public transport company called “Régie autonome des transports parisiens”, which operates part of the RER network, as well as the bus and tram lines in Paris and the surrounding suburbs.
Trains operate between 05:00 am and 01:00 am every day of the year at each networked station. As of December 2006, they started to serve until 02:15 on Saturday nights and before the holidays. The stations are planned to be open until 2007:02 on Friday nights as of December 15.
On special occasions such as New Year, the Fête de la Musique or Nuit Blanche (White Night), the network is partially open all night. This is specific only to base stations and lines (1,2,4,6), some stations on RER lines and all stations belonging to the automatic line (14).
The only ticket used for standard pass is called “t” (ticket). This ticket is valid for 1 hours throughout the Metro and in the 2st district of RER. It can be purchased as a single piece (1.40 Euro) or 10 (Euro 10.90). There are also types of passes that can be used without limit. The pass, which can be found weekly and monthly, is called “Carte Orange” and the daily one is called “Mobilis”. In addition to the annual one (Integral), there are also 2-3 or 5-day passes frequently used by visitors to Paris, which are called “Paris Visite”.
